Diego Velasquez, One of Spain’s Most Popular Painters

A lot of Spanish painters have put a standard in the world of painting, and during Spain’s Golden Age or what is called El Siglo de Oro; a number of amazing Spanish painters were recognized. This artist became respected and popular in many parts of the world and could be acknowledged as one of the most famous if not the most famous Spanish painters of all time—Diego Velasquez. He was alleged to be good friends with King Philip IV and his chief minister, as he was revered by his paintings, showcasing his talents and style in every portrait he has done.
Diego Velasquez was brought to life in June 5, 1599 in Seville and he is the eldest of six children and came from a family of average class. He showed some ability in painting and at the age of eleven, he was granted an apprenticeship in the workshop of the great Francisco Pacheco who trained him and helped him hone his skills as a painter. Velasquez later on married Pacheco’s daughter and made a living by painting with religious themes and creating still life paintings of tavern pieces; through it he saved a lot of money and bought a nice house for them and another house to be rented out.
Diego Velasquez created many of unique paintings that made him popular and an example of the country’s most influential personalities. Upon meeting Marques de Spinola, he made one of his popular works titled Surrender of Breda which pictures the victory of Spinola; when Spinola saw the painting he was amazed by Velasquez’ skill and how brilliant he was as a painter, extraordinarily capturing emotion through the realism in his portraits. Another creation which could be the most famous one credited to his name, is The Maids in Honour or Las Meninas; interestingly, he painted himself inside the piece, quietly working on a canvas at the background.
Diego Velasquez is truly a national treasure, and it is sure that his style had influenced the way artists of today will see the art of painting.
